Think we may have solved this one. The start/stop script, which we adapted from and old Redbook, used grep with the username to identify unwanted .NOTESMEM files and it was matching the group of the user running the other partitioned server. When cronjobs restarted the server after a backup the part of the script that ran the tidyup was running as root and stripping out the files of the other server from /tmp.
